89.2 can't boot on Dell Latitude D610 laptop

    It hangs populating /dev, eventually continues, on my screen I see:

    /sbin/bashlogin: /sbin/bashligin: cannot execute binary file
    ...
    INIT: Id "3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
    /sbin/bashlogin: /sbin/bashligin: cannot execute binary file
    INIT: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
    /sbin/bashlogin: /sbin/bashligin: cannot execute binary file
    ...
    INIT: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
    ...
