A while back I ran into problems with Finnix loading the incorrect image files when I had one on the harddrive or something and tried booting a newer version off of the harddrive (which was a big problem since almost universally it will fail when trying to use a different image -- especially an older one as is likely to be found in such a situation.) At the time my solution for the problem was to use the depreciated root= statement which caused troubles when it was later completely removed. Since then I've learned how to use the finnixfile= statement to more or less solve my problem. Still, it has occured to me that it might be better to just avoid the whole problem in the first place so people will rarely run into it on their own. My idea for this solution is that each release should default to using a filename more specific to that release so that each one is unique and it won't accidentally use an image file from a different release. This filename scheme should follow the 8.3 filenaming scheme for maximum compatibilty though, so I guess that limits it a bit. I was thinking something along the lines of a naming scheme such as "finnixs0.891" for the latest official stable release and such as "finnixd1.976" for the latest dev snapshot, but as long as filenames are pretty unique it solves the problem. I have been manually doing this myself lately, so I don't propose this as a solution so much for myself as just a generic thing I think might be good for others.
