Finnix is Free software, licensed under the GNU General Public License. For a less formal discussion about how Finnix manages software licensing, see this blog post from 2011.

The Distribution Itself

What does it mean for Finnix itself to be released under the GPL? While Finnix is comprised of Free software (some GPL, some with other Free licenses), all of the "glue" that makes Finnix what it is is released under the GPL. The scripts, initrd, kernel configs, directory structure, etc, etc. Individual code files should have copyright declarations at the top with more information.

Debian

Finnix is based on Debian Linux. All packages included from Debian are Free according to the terms of the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

GPL Source Distribution Compliance

Finnix

The source to all packages developed by Finnix, or Debian packages modified by Finnix when needed, are available at http://archive.finnix.org/ as of Finnix 105, and http://packages.finnix.org/ for previous versions.

Debian

All Debian packages' sources are available via the Debian mirrors. To easily download the source to a particular package, go to http://packages.debian.org/package, where package is the name of the package you wish to download.

If a specific version to a package no longer appears on the Debian mirrors, then it has been moved to http://snapshot.debian.net/.

Other

Currently, all packages within Finnix are either from Debian, or included in the Finnix packages archive. If this ever changes in the future, this area will be updated with where to download the appropriate source. If you have a question regarding where to find the source of a particular piece of software included with Finnix, please ask on the mailing list.

Static Busybox binaries on the initrd are built from unmodified Busybox and uClibc sources. The Busybox config is located at /bin/busybox.config.gz on the initrd.

Section 3(b) Compliance

Most of the software distributed with Finnix is taken directly from upstream Debian packages, and is not modified or recompiled by Finnix. Software that is modified or recompiled by Finnix will have a version number with a "finnix" tag added, and will be available at http://packages.finnix.org/. If you require or desire the sources for unmodified Debian upstream packages, retrieving them from Debian is the simplest solution to all parties.

However, Finnix complies with section 3(b) of the GNU General Public License version 2:

Accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party, for a charge no more than your cost of physically performing source distribution, a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code, to be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange

Complete sources for all Finnix releases are archived and will be made available for anyone who requests them, in CD format, via postal mail, for a nominal charge. If you only require one or two source packages, Finnix can work with you to send a copy of individual packages electronically.

Trademark

While the Finnix software itself is governed by copyright and released under the GPL, the Finnix name and mark itself is a registered trademark of Ryan Finnie. You may use the Finnix logo to discuss/promote Finnix, as long as you comply with the Logo Display Guidelines.
